Once you sign, your project moves through five stages. Here is what each one looks like from your side: when you need to be home, and where the waiting actually comes from.
The five stages
- Site survey. A technician measures your roof and checks your electrical panel, usually within days of signing. You need to be home for this one.
- Design and permits. Engineers finalize the layout, then we file permits with your city and an interconnection application with your utility. Nothing for you to do here except watch for updates.
- Install day. The crew mounts the panels, runs the wiring, and sets your equipment. Most home installs finish in one to two days. Someone needs to be home, and your power may be off for a short stretch.
- Inspection. Your city or county confirms the work meets code. We schedule it and handle it. If your inspector needs access to the house, we tell you ahead of time.
- Permission to operate. Your utility does a final review and grants written approval. Then we turn the system on.
Where the waiting comes from
The honest answer: permit offices and utilities set part of the pace, and it varies by city. We track every application and follow up so nothing sits in a pile, but we cannot stamp a city permit ourselves. When a stage is waiting on an office, we tell you that plainly instead of going quiet.
One thing not to do
Do not switch the system on before permission to operate arrives. Utilities require that written approval first, and flipping it early can set the whole process back.
